It is common for people who are thinking about getting dermal fillers to hesitate because of the pain that they expect. If you are afraid that getting dermal filler injections will be painful because of the needles,...

You might be interested in learning about the special instruments that we use at Kessel Dermatology. We do not use hypodermic needles for our cosmetic injections. Instead, we rely on blunt-tipped microcannulas to help to minimize the pain that our patients experience.

Blunt-tip Microcannula vs. Hypodermic Needle

Blunt-tip microcannulas are tiny tubes that have blunt tips. They can be used to insert fat or fluid into the layers of the skin. By contrast, hypodermic needles have very sharp tips that are used to pierce through the skin and tissue for injections. Microcannulas can be used in a single entry point for a greater area of coverage than hypodermic needles can offer.

Advantages of Microcannulas for Dermal Filler Injections

Microcannulas offer multiple advantages over hypodermic needles for dermal filler injections. People who use microcannulas experience less downtime. They also show significantly less bruising and experience minimal pain than people who receive fillers with hypodermic needles. According to a study that was published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, participants who received dermal filler injections with microcannulas reported significantly lower perceptions of pain than did people who received their injections with hypodermic needles. The researchers also found that using microcannulas helped to reduce ecchymosis, which is the skin discoloration that is associated with bruising.
