Many times, patients with rashes that continually recur or do not resolve with traditional medical approaches have an allergy to something in their environment. This condition is called Allergic Contact Dermatitis, and its cause can be very challenging to identify.
When we suspect an environmental cause for certain skin rashes, we sometimes perform a diagnostic procedure known as patch testing, wherein “patches” containing small amounts of allergens (substances potentially causing the allergic reaction) found in suspected products are applied to the skin to evaluate your personal response to these products. We also have the capability to prepare specific patches from patient’s individual home products and garments when necessary. An expert will interpret these results, explain the nature of your condition, and may provide a list of products you can safely use, as well as products to avoid.
Patch testing is considered the gold standard in diagnosis of contact allergy. Please note that allergic patch tests cannot be performed on your initial visit, as each array of patches must be first individually tailored to, and assembled for your specific condition.
To request an evaluation to determine whether patch testing is appropriate for you, please call the office, and schedule an appointment today.
