Folliculitis is a common type of skin irritation characterized by small red bumps that may resemble pimples. Stemming from a wide range of possible causes – including shaving, skin infections and other skin conditions like dermatitis ...

Folliculitis may be acute or chronic. In many cases, breakouts are mild and can be resolved using conservative treatment methods. If folliculitis persists or recurs over time, however, a patient may consider more advanced treatments such as light therapy for folliculitis

Light Therapy for Folliculitis: What It Is & How It Can Help

Folliculitis can cause a long list of uncomfortable and potentially embarrassing symptoms. A few of the most common ones include:

  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Sores that crust over and/or fill with pus
  • Skin inflammation & tenderness

If these symptoms linger or cause you severe discomfort, your skin care provider may recommend light therapy for folliculitis. At Kessel Dermatology, we offer Narrowband Ultraviolet B (NbUVB) light therapy, a treatment which is clinically proven to reduce symptoms of folliculitis.

In order to target and treat folliculitis bumps, we use a specific frequency band of ultraviolet light (311 – 313 nm) that is known to be a powerful yet safe treatment for many common skin disorders. Aside from being highly effective, NbUVB is also advantageous in that it is a fast, convenient folliculitis treatment with minimal side effects.

In some cases, medications may be prescribed along with light therapy for folliculitis. Steroid creams, oral antibiotics and topical antibiotic creams are a few possible treatments which may be suggested to help clear up folliculitis. The right treatment regimen will vary from patient to patient depending on the type and severity of folliculitis.
