What You Should Know When Considering Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are often considered when individuals want to help create a smoother and fuller appearance in their faces. Their cheeks and lips can appear wrinkle free and the volume of certain areas can be increased. While it is a common procedure in the modern age, there are some important risks and other factors that must be considered when choosing dermal fillers. Here are the things you should know before moving forward.

Potential Risks

As with any procedure, there are potential side effects that individuals may experience. Some of these are more common than others, but if used in an unapproved manner, dermal fillers can be more of a burden than a help.

Some of the more common side effects include:

  • Bruising in the injection area
  • Redness of the skin
  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Itchiness

There are less common side effects such as bumping on or under the skin, infections, allergic reactions, or even necrosis, or tissue death. The United States Food and Drug Administration has received reports of rare side effects, such as stroke, skin damage, injury to blood supply, and blindness.

Proper FDA-Approved Uses

The FDA has approved the use of dermal fillers to correct facial wrinkles and skin folds, cheek acne scars for patients over the age of 21, correction of facial fat loss in HIV patients, and lip and cheek augmentation in patients over the age of 21. Hand augmentation has also been approved by the FDA.

On the other hand, the FDA has not approved the use of dermal fillers to increase the size of one’s breasts, buttocks, feet, or as an implant in the bone, tendon, ligament, or muscle.
